How to Make Your Own DIY Gravity Bong?

It’s true, you can make your own potent gravity bong! A gravity bong is easier to make than a classic bong because there are fewer components. You only need three parts to this DIY recipe. Gather a bottle for your top and base, cut them in half, and add a bowl piece. Just like that, you add some water & herb, then you’re ready to smoke your gravity bong! Please note that DIY-ing is at your own risk; proceed with caution! Let’s dive into what you’ll need & how to get started.

Gravity Bong Materials List

  • Plastic or glass bottle (2-liter bottles are perfect!)
  • A bowl piece (you can get this at any smoke shop!)
  • Water
  • Lighter or matches
  • Scissors or box cutter

How to DIY a Gravity Bong

Step 1 - Prep:

Grab the bottle you will use to construct your gravity bong. Wash out your bottle thoroughly with soap and water. Make sure you have no residue left from your previous beverage. A sticky bottle will not make a great bong.

Step 2 - Assemble:

Use your scissors to cut along the middle of your bottle. You want two pieces to construct the gravity bong. A base to fill with water and a tube to create the suction needed to gather the smoke. Make sure the top of your bottle fits well inside the base. Add your bowl piece to the mouth of your bottle, where you would normally place the bottle cap.

Step 3 - Add Water:

Fill your bottle about halfway to create the suction needed to pull in your smoke. Your top bottle should be mostly submerged in water. Be like Goldilocks, not too much or too little! You need the water just right to get your powerful hits going.

Step 4 - Smoking Time:

Now you are ready to add your herbs, light your bowl, and lift your top bottle to start gathering smoke. Push down and inhale to smoke your gravity bong.

DIY Gravity Bong FAQ’s

What are the Benefits of Using a Gravity Bong?

Besides the obvious answer, “it looks cool,” there are many benefits. First of all, this kind of bong is highly efficient! With one pull, you get a potent hit that is not for your lightweight stoner. Although we will say the gravity bong is less harsh on your lungs, due to the water filtration. So maybe you can let your newbie friend try a hit. Another reason stoners love this method of smoking is the cost! You can easily make a powerful piece and recycle some materials at no cost to you.

What Safety Measures Do You Take When Using Your Gravity Bong?

Ensure you have good ventilation where you are smoking to avoid lots of smoke building up. When trying your gravity bong, take small hits to start, to test your tolerance. Finally, make sure you have good materials when you’re building your gravity bong, such as glass or metal.

How to Choose the Right Bottle for Your Gravity Bong?

You can have a large gravity bong or a small one! It just depends on your needs. 1-2 litre bottles are great standard gravity bongs, big hits and good to share. A small bottle is perfect for personal sessions and smaller hits. If you really want to go BIG, some people use large containers like buckets so multiple stoners can enjoy their hits simultaneously!

How to select a Gravity Bong Bowl?

Important factors to consider for your gravity bong bowl are size, material, and depth. Size and depth are obvious right? Make sure your bowl fits nicely into your bottle and that it’s deep enough for you to pack in your herb. The materials for your bowl should be glass or metal. I would avoid the tin foil, personally.

How to Maintain my DIY Gravity Bong?

Maintaining any bong is important, but your DIY will likely be more sensitive than your standard glass piece. So you want to clean and rinse your piece every session, to keep it as fresh as possible for as long as possible! A solid deep clean with ISO and salt will also extend your piece’s lifespan.

Conclusion: Build or Buy Gravity Bongs?

Gravity bongs are fairly easy to DIY, so then why do people all over the internet have these gorgeous gravity bongs they bought? Well, if you are asking me the rhetorical question I just posed, I would of course go with a glass piece, built by a company I trust. Not that I don’t feel confident I could build a great DIY, but it wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful or creative as the pieces that come from Gloop! Plus there’s no risk of me cutting myself or needing to build a new piece every few weeks. With a professional glass piece, you are guaranteeing yourself a long-lasting piece with a beautiful design.
